Top high school senior athletes participate in All-Star week

CONWAY,  Ark. (KTHV) -- It's going to be a busy week in Conway as UCA prepares to host the 2013 High School All-Star week. It's  a chance for the best high school athletes in the state to showcase their talents.

The best male and female athletes will compete in baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball and football.

Although the games don't begin until Tuesday, the athletes arrived at UCA Monday afternoon. For these seniors, they're looking forward to the chance for one last game.

"It's real exciting to be back in the game, be back playing with everyone. Just get like one more game. I think it's really cool how you can see all of the athletes. And to think that all these people are like champions and stuff," says Jared Thielke, former goalkeeper for St. Joseph's in Conway.

In September of 2012, he was arrested on two counts of sexual assault on another underage age male student at Emerald Dragon.

List of blood drives in Central Ark. this summer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (American Red Cross) - While Independence Day will surely ignite many fireworks extravaganzas, the American Red Cross is counting on volunteer donors to spark the nation's blood supply. The need for blood is constant, especially around the summer holidays, when eligible donors have even less time in their busy schedules to give.

As part of the Red Cross Summer of Stories campaign to increase donations when they historically drop, all presenting donors between July 1 and 15 could win one of five $3,000 American Express gift cards. Donors are also encouraged to visit redcrossblood.org/summer to share their summer blood donation stories and watch videos of patients whose lives were touched by donors.

To learn more and make an appointment to donate blood, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.

Today's Box Office: A Different Superman vs. Dirty Jokes

Man of Steel is not the Superman that I grew up with and it's not one we've seen before. This film is the story of a guy who's trying to find his place in the world. It gives a twist on Superman's origin and the planet Krypton that we haven't seen on film. Zachary Snyder (director) and David S. Goyer (writer) have created a unique Superman who reflects on his life and is searching for the way to live in ours. The story of Clark Kent becoming Superman feels as real as the destruction that is depicted when Kryptonians collide. Michael Shannon's Zod and Henry Cavill's Kal 'El are perfects fits for what is created in this film. The filmmakers have done a great job of realizing Superman's power and recreating what you'd expect from the effects of the use of those powers.

My advice is to just sit back and watch the incredible Man of Steel.

Dangerous water in Gulf Shores affects Ark. visitors

GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP/KTHV) - A popular traveling destination for Arkansans had some deadly swimming conditions this week.

Gulf Shores, Alabama closed all of its beaches on Monday after four men drowned in dangerous rip currents in the Gulf of Mexico since Sunday.

City officials on Monday posted double red flags on all beaches in the city, meaning that extremely hazardous conditions are present and all waters are closed to the public.

The city said in a statement that water conditions might not appear life-threatening, but underlying rip currents posed a significant risk to anyone entering the Gulf.

Beaches in Gulf Shores were re-opened Tuesday under yellow-flag conditions, meaning that moderate surf and/or currents were present, and swimmers should use caution, according to a telephone hotline for information on beach conditions.
